                                              • The TR-1000 positioner provides one tilting axis and one rotational axis. Despite the compact design, it is one of the most powerful positioners for welding applications.

The ergonomic loading height, which is determined by the corresponding base, enables the implementation of flexible system concepts.

This positioner can handle work pieces with a maximum diameter of 1200 mm and weighing up to 1000 kg. The distance between the centre of gravity of the welding structure and the faceplate can be up to 400 mm.

This enables realistic loading with the maximum permitted weight. Due to two infinitely rotating welding mass transformers (2 x 360A), two robots can weld simultaneously in the system.

                                                • Surface treatment and Abrasive Blasting with Motoman Robots
Abrasive blasting is the operation of propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure, in order to smooth, roughen or shape a surface or remove surface contaminants. A pressurised fluid - typically compressed air - is used ad a media to propel the blasting material. This process is mainly used to clean or prepare surfaces of parts to be painted, or to clean them.

All Motoman Handling robots are well suited to automate this procedure, as they provide large operating workspaces and high reorientation speeds. Their programming flexibility allows perfect adjustment of trajectories, distance and blasting direction, either by conventional teaching methods, or by (semi-) automatic path generation through Offline Simulation or CAD/CAM tools.

Robots can either manipulate an assembly tool (e.g. nutrunner), or move the workpiece to/from a stationary assembly station. In this case, specialized gripper tooling is attached to the end of the arm, to manipulate parts and assemblies in several stages.

Literally thousands of robots are already working in this demanding application, exposed to excrements and kicks every day. Robotic milking stations perform teat cleaning and milking procedures, following the cow's movements guided by intelligent laser camera and machine vision guided. In combination with the transponder identification of the cow, the milking protocol is communicated to the central management software, this helping to collect accurate data and achieving lower empty rates and better milk yields.

Cutting material is a wide field for robotic automation. The target is the same - cutting parts to a defined length or shape, or deburring or trimming parts after moulding processes.

Cutting applications are becoming automated regularly these days. While some companies choose a flatbed cutter for their cutting applications, others are starting to see the benefits of using six-axis robots for this process.

This web page section is focussing mechanical cutting (with knives), sawing, ultrasonic cutting / trimming, waterjet cutting, plasma cutting, laser cutting, using mechanical knives or media for cutting. Deburring and trimming can also be executed with material removal tools which is topic of our material removal web page section.

Robots do either loading/unloading parts to cutting machines, or they are handling the cutting tool directly.

Motoman Robots are commonly used for consistent application of fluid and adhesive material, due to their ability to follow an accurate path with a precisely controlled speed. Applications are sealing, dosing, dispensing, glueing and application of insulation material. Robots work with material pumps, regulators, and dispensing guns to apply a material such as sealant, adhesive, or washing solution to a stationary or moving part. In most of those dispensing applications, the robot does not manipulate the dosing tool directly - the robot is handling the part under a dispensing tool, and the dispensing unit is stationary. This is much better for the process stability of the media supply.

In many companies, sanding and polishing is a tough manual job, and people often do not get the idea to automate their polishing process. Workers have to wear protective safety clothing and are exposed to chemicals all the day - robots withstand all these challenges easily.

Many polishing automation jobs are pretty straight forward and simple to automate - with the right reliable Motoman Robot providing the requested stability, speed and IP protection.

                                                • Human-Robot-Collaboration with Motoman Cobots (HC Series)
The term Human-Robot-Collaboration refers to using a type of robot which is designed to work in close proximity to humans, possibly even directly controlled by human workers through touch and guidance. This type of robot is different from traditional industrial robotic arms which are faster, heavier and more powerful, but too dangerous for humans to work with directly, and are caged off in factories and wherever else they are used.

Basically, the application range of collaborative robots (Cobots) is similar to classical Industrial Robots, including Assembly, Machine Tending, Palletizing, Quality Inspection, Arc Welding, Glueing, Bonding, Polishing, Deburring. The differentiation point is that the realisation of a collaborative application should include elements of Human-Robot Coexistence, Cooperation and Collaboration. With collaborative robots, you basically sacrifice speed for the chance of fenceless installations and the benefits of real human-robot interaction.

The growth in global collaborative robot sales has been phenomenal, but mainly not because they are allowing safe cooperation with humans, but because configuration, commissioning and operating is so easy. This allows small- and medium-sized companies to step into automation ef existing work environments at affordable investments.

YASKAWA are offering our HC Series Robot models for safe & direct Human-Robot-Collaboration. But - good news - easy-to use concepts are also available for classical GP Series handling robots as well, like the innovative Smart Pendant.

Labelling, marking amd printing with robots is much more versatile and flexible than using hard-automated labelling stations. Sometimes even half time job for robots, and the labelling job is combined with other robotic tasks in packaging lines.

                                                • Laser Layer Surface Hardening with Motoman GP Series Robots
Laser hardening is a method aimed at improving component wear behaviour.

During laser hardening, the energy from the laser beam is applied directly to the component surface. The surface layer is heated up to the hardening temperature (>1000°C) in a reduced area within a very short period of time. When laser hardening, the laser beam and its adjustable focal spot are guided by a robot over the surfaces to be hardened.

For this process, you will need the high precision robotic control over TCP Path and speed which distinguishes Motoman robots from other brands.

In case of Robotic Laser Welding, the robot is carrying a laser head mounted to the face plate of the robot arm. The laser head has focusing optics for the laser light and an integral height control mechanism.

YASKAWA are capable to deliver the components (like High Precision versions of our robots) as well as complete laser welding cells.

                                                • Machine Tending - Loading/Unloading with Motoman Robots
Robotic machine tending (CNC Machine Automation) is the process of using a robot system to automatically load and unload a production machine. This can be any kind of machine, most common are CNC machine tools or Injection moulding machines. Some large machine tool manufacturers are offering robotic loading/unloading as ex-works standard options. But in most application cases the layouts, workflows, workpieces and requirements are so individual case by case, that Specialized System Integrators are offering a wide variety of standardized and individual robotic automation.

Since decades, Yaskawa Motoman Robots have been excessively used in a wide range of robotic solutions for all kind of cutting, finishing, polishing, grinding, milling, deburring or other material removal applications. The reason is that MOTOMAN Robots offer the right composition of industrial rigidity, stiffness, sensitivity and dust-/liquid proof kind of design which you could expect from a 6-axis-robot challenged by such tough applications - often being heavily exposed to unpredictable external forces, vibration, dust, chips, liquids and all kind of challenging workpiece geometry variations.

                                                • Mechanical Fastening / Joining with Motoman Robots
When it comes to robotic automation of a mechanical joining operation, Automation Experts often prefer to let the robot move the workpiece, not the fastener tool. Fastening machinery is often designed for stationary installation (e.g. on a stand) as they require media supply (power, fastener feeding) and may cause reaction forces/moments or vibrations during the joining process.

But for those cases where the robot is operating an assembly tool like a fastener, nutrunner, riveter, clinch tool, it is good to know that the industrial quality of all Motoman GP, HC, SIA and SDA series robots is absolutely rigid and strong enough to withstand the reaction forces/moments and vibrations resulting from the assembly process.

Moving robots in mobile platforms from place to place automatically - this exciting idea has been realized in many single and pilot projects over the last years. Multi-Machine operations, robots working without classical desks, case picking, automatic refill of storages in retail logistics ...

Project realization was often impaired by technical challenges, like power supply of the robot / tool, battery endurance, reach/payload, gripper technology, vision technology, navigation and positioning accuracy, path and job planning, communication to MES/ERP Systems or fleet managing software, and safety consideration when operating the platform in the middle of workers. In the end - this technology is waiting for a mass production breakthrough. In the end the pick rates compared to manual work were lower, and the cost of the complete installation were good to rectify technology scouting, but not a proper return on investment of a real application.

But there is hope - modern Cobots with long reach (like the HC10, HC20) and Industrial Digitalisation have become really promising enablers to achieve a breakthrough of robot arms on mobile platforms. Many System Integrators are on their way to attack an interesting world of logistic and multi-machine connecting applications. YASKAWA is ready to supply the robotic and controls technology.

                                                • Painting, Spraying, Coating, Powder Coating with Motoman Robots
Painting or coating production tasks are exactly what robots are designed for. Robots also spray on solvent-based paints with or without high voltage, always achieving the same results. In the automated cell it is easier to maintain a consistent temperature and humidity, resulting in reproducible quality.

Although a MOTOMAN robotic system is extremely fast, its high precision and well-coordinated movements along the path save a considerable amount of time and reduce waste. The paint coating is applied consistently at maximum speed, with guaranteed perfect results.

For Painting and Coating in ATEX environments, we recommend the MPX series robots, offering a range of painting robots that are perfectly tailored to customer requirements and provide top quality results.

                                                • Pallet Assembly, Dismantling and Repair with Motoman Robots
This world's transport logistics is based on pallets. While single pallets will be recycled and finally burned, pool pallets are taken back and repaired if damaged. Doing this manually in pallet repair centers means lifting 30kg pallets from staples, using dangerous tiger saws and nailing for the workers. Motoman Robots are shifting this dangerous work to robots and are able to assemble custom pallets automatically, including handling and glueing. The repair works both with open pool pallets and closed pool pallets.

                                                • Palletizing and Depalletizing with Motoman Robots
Palletizing is the act of stacking products onto a wooden (or plastic) shipping pallet for transport. Depalletizing is the unloading of these products at the destination. Palletizing is a relatively simple application for a robot to accomplish, as it involves minimal variation. Depalletizing is more complex and typically involves machine vision and sophisticated end effectors.

Yaskawa Motoman offers manufacturers a wide range of robotic solutions for palletizing and depalletizing. When using flexible robotics with 2D and 3D vision systems, specialized software and tooling enable you to customize your shipping and receiving without sacrificing speed and accuracy.

                                                • Picking and Packing / Unpacking and Packaging
Picking and Packing is a variation of Pick & Place for Packaging applications, where the placing motion is modified to fill parts into containers, boxes or crates. Some people say PPP - Pick, Place and Pack. Therefore, it is a core process in Packaging Industry and Logistics. Compared to classical Pick&Place, the Placing motion of a packaging operation requires some more motion versatility to place or stack parts in a certain set-down pattern, this is why 6-axis GP Series robots are used here. When placing parts into Carton boxes, flexible trajectories could be required to prevent side walls or lid of cartons to fold in.

Depending on the gripper design, all kind of workpieces like boxes, bottles, bags can be packed.

                                                • Pick & Place and Bin Picking with Motoman Robots
A pick-and-place robot is used to automate the process of picking up objects and placing them onto a surface in a set position and orientation. This action is frequently used to sort or stage products in a specific array for a downstream process, such as trays or cases, where fixed machinery or another robot can properly handle the products. Typical pick & place jobs are used for high speed picking, collating, part-transfer, singulation, sorting and inspection. In many cases, parts are coming along a conveyor belt, and the pick & place motion helps to sort or arrange the parts into a certain order at the place location.

Pick and Pack is a variation of Pick & Place, used on Packaging, where the placing motion is more complex to fill containers, boxes or crates. Some people say PPP - Pick, Place and Pack. Terminology is not standardized in this field.

Typical workpieces for bending operations are metal sheet/panels and tubes. The automation of bending processes is very effective and typically generates a quick return of investment.

Robotic Part Handling for Tube Bending Machines

Of course, the simplest way to automate bending processes is to use robots for loading/unloading bending machines. The bending operation is done by the bending machine, the robot's job is handling the tubes, which is a quite easy job for industrial robots.
