Company Profile

The Application Centre Augsburg is a project of the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) of the Technische Universität München (TUM). The iwb parent organisation operates as a part of the engineering faculty. This permits the kind of interdisciplinary collaboration that is required to work on production engineering problems in a holistic approach. At its Augsburg facilities, the iwb has been operating the application centre for production oriented companies since the summer of 1994. With the capabilities available at the Augsburg user centre, the iwb directly approaches companies in the region Bayerisch-Schwaben, thereby laying the groundwork for intensive collaboration between research and industry. The objective of the Augsburg user centre is to generate user-oriented knowledge and to make it available to small and medium-sized businesses through fast and unbureaucratic technology transfer. The success of the Application Centre Augsburg is based on the focus on three competences: • Competence of science – competence in the Production Technology, • Competence of research – competence in the focused fields of research and • User-competence – competence in the industrial implementation. The synthesis of these competences is our key ability! We apply it to develop corresponding options of operation for the future so that we can fulfill the responsability in sense of progress. Independent research at the Augsburg site and close affiliation with the institute`s headquarter in Munich provide on-site access to the entire technical & scientific and methodological know-how of the iwb. Modern machines and equipment as well as an effective IT-infrastructure permit efficient and thorough project execution. The four business segments of the Application Centre Augsburg are: • Company organisation • Automation • Rapid Manufacturing • Simulation Company organisation: • Design and implementation of modern structures of production • Improvement of the application management • Implementation of supply chain management in business networks Automation: • Technological and economical analyses in view of potentials for optimisation at existing handling and joining processes • Creation and evaluation of alternative handling and joining processes • Realisation of technical and economical feasibility studies • Development and construction of manufacturing ressources • Prototypical implementation of automation concepts Rapid Manufacturing: • Development and improvement of rapid technologies • Application of generative technologies • Qualification of rapid technologies for new approaches • Analyses, configuration and improvement of manufacturing processes • Consulting in the field of rapid manufacturing, rapid tooling and rapid prototyping Simulation: • Consulting in the field of application of simulation techniques and tools • Computer aided optimisation of products, production processes and production systems • Implementation of simulation technology in companies • Providing of hard and soft ware at the use of simulation • CAD-modelling and CAE-training (eg FEM)
