      • Lithium Ion technology

      • Introduction

        A lithium ion battery cell is based on a technology where lithium ions are the charge ‘carrier’ and can move back and forth from the cathode (positive current collector) to the anode (negative current collector). Cathode and anode are electrically isolated from each other with a separator. An electrochemical cell consists of two currents. One external electric current, and one internal ionic current. The separator is designed to allow for an ionic current, but not an electric current.

        Therefore a separator is used which has the double function to isolate and to allow the ions to pass through.

        When charging the battery the ions move from the cathode (positive) to the anode (negative). When discharging the ions move back to the cathode.

        This process can be repeated a number of times during the life of the battery cell which is called the cycle life of a battery

        High quality manufacturing yields high performance cells

        One of the most important factors for the performance of a battery cell is the way the cell is produced. The production of a cell consists of several steps bringing it from raw material all the way to an assembled, activated cell that is ready for operation.

        Leclanché is unique in using a water based production process for the electrodes which eliminates the need to use polluting solvents and therefore we have a more sustainable production process.

        Leclanché, in its factory in Germany, has a fully automated production line where both Lithium Titanate Oxide and Lithium Graphite/NMC cells are produced. The production starts with the processing of the powders through coating on the anode and the cathode. Next the cathodes and anodes are assembled in a roll to roll process together with the ceramic separator. All these layers are laminated to assure optimal integrity of the cell and ensure maximum performance over its life.

        Once all these layers are stacked, a tab is welded onto the cathodes and anodes and next they are inserted into a pouch. After adding the electrolyte, the pouches are sealed and formed during which they are charged for the first time in their life.

        After the formation the cells undergo a final quality check and they are ready to go into the application.

      • Modules & Systems

      • The battery system

        Battery cells don’t make a system yet. They have to be integrated into a battery module together with a Battery Management System, a Battery Controller and Switch Unit.

        Leclanché provides battery modules with integrated Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors the temperature and operating voltage of each individual cell in the module and takes care of balancing the cells.

        Leclanché designed the battery modules to accommodate both Lithium Graphite/NMC and Lithium Titanate Oxide cells. Individual battery modules are built into a string to reach the right level of energy storage and the required voltage levels for the application. Each string is controlled by a string controller.

        Battery modules and systems area available for both stationary applications in 19” rack mount format and for mobile applications.

        In stationary applications the racks are built into systems with airflow cooling. Mobile applications often need customized battery packs because of space limitations. The cooling strategy for these battery packs has to be aligned with the available space and surrounding.

        For these applications Leclanché developed the flexible mobile system which can be fitted with cooling systems based on water or air flow systems.

        The application

        In all applications the battery system has to cooperate seamlessly with the energy source and the load. Be it in a bus or in a microgrid, a ferry or an electricity grid, the battery has to be charged and discharged at the right speed and the right moment.

        This requires a seamless integration of the battery management system, the charge/discharge controller and the overlying energy management system.

        • Titanate industrial storage

        • The TiRack63 is a storage rack for large scale energy storage applications based on Leclanché powerful Lithium Titanate cells. The main benefit of this rack is that it can be used for 15000 charge/discharge cycles at 100% Depth of Discharge. The racks can be charged at a high rate of 3C (300A) and discharge at the same high rate providing a lot of power.

          TiRacks are used to build large storage systems in containers or in buildings.

          Each TiRack includes:
          • 15 lithium Titanate modules
          • One Rack controller to monitor and manage the rack
          • Switch unit to connect/disconnect the rack in the large system

          This product has been developed to address a number of applications where a lot of power is required like:

          • Grid stabilization in on-grid applications
          • Providing short term power to cover the first seconds in a grid failure incident to industrial users.
          • Managing the integration of renewable energy (solar and wind) into off grid applications with diesel generators (e.g. mining),

        • The Graphite Rack is a storage rack for large scale energy storage applications based on Leclanché high energy Lithium Graphite/NMC cells. The main benefit of this rack is that it can be used for 8000 charge/discharge cycles at 80% Depth of Discharge. The racks can be charged at a high rate of 1C (300A) and discharge at 2.3C to provide a high flow of energy when required.

          Graphite Racks are used to build large storage systems in containers or in buildings.

          Each Graphite Rack includes:

          • 10 Lithium Graphite/NMC modules
          • One Rack controller to monitor and manage the rack
          • Switch unit to connect/disconnect the rack in the large system

          This product has been developed to address a number of applications where a lot of power is required like:

        • The Apollion Cube is our best attempt at squaring the circle: it’s a compact and high performance storage system with lithium-ion technology at an outstanding price/performance ratio.

          Quality/ Safety
          Hazard-free operation is guaranteed using tried and tested technology, integrated cell monitoring and a redundant safety concept. Like all our batteries, the Apollion Cube has also been certified by independent testing institutes.

          The storage system is developed according to standards and tested by independent institutes, such as TÜV Rheinland. A 7 year pro-rata warranty gives your investment sufficient additional protection.

          Performance characteristics
          The Apollion Cube is a power pack in the form of a cube with a high quality design and 6.7 kWh of nominal storage capacity. In order to increase the capacity, up to 12 systems can be combined together to form a battery with over 80 kWh. Efficient operation is ensured through constant temperature control and high-speed charging capability.

          With the Apollion Cube we do not only increase the flexibility and capacity of a storage system, but we give you full control. You can keep a constant eye on your system via PC, Tablet or Smartphone thanks to continuous performance monitoring. You can revert to a wide range of charge controllers by SMA. Other well-known systems give a wider range of possible configurations.

        • Energy storage systems by Leclanché are far ahead of their time. This is guaranteed both by the lithium-titanate technology and the patented ceramic separator as well as the innovative raw materials and the water-based electrode manufacturing. With 15,000 charging and discharging cycles and a reclaimable storage capacity of 95% the TiBox sets standards of a new dimension.

          The TiBox can be fully charged or discharged within one hour. It is, to the greatest possible extent, tolerant against temperature variations. A storage system for all who demand the highest standards of innovative technology and sustainable longevity.

          Perfectly matched components from in-house production for maximum safety

          Owing to the unique separator technology, the core element of the lithium-titanate cells, the security of the Leclanché storage systems is far above average. The ceramic separator renders the cell essentially insusceptible to thermal failure. As a result of the exclusive use of our own technology the system and the cell are perfectly matched, offer the highest performance and the highest degree of safety.

          Additional safety measures on the system level guarantee a carefree use even in residential buildings. Certified installation partners will provide a reliable installation and will also be pleased to be your contact for issues relating to the operation and optimization of the system. Tested by TÜV Rheinland (German Association for Technical Inspection) Leclanché storage systems meet all important safety standards.

        • Solar street lighting – light without the powerline

        • Providing light at night even in remote locations is important for safety and security. However in many locations there is no ready infrastructure to connect streetlights.

          Powering streetlights also requires a lot of energy which most of time is generated by conventional (coal- or gas fired) power installations, creating CO2 and other greenhouse gasses.

          Local power, local light
          Generating the energy for the streetlight locally with solar PV panels has a lot of benefits but to convert the solar power into night-time light it needs to be stored.

          Leclanché provides a complete solar streetlight storage solution which consists of Leclanché Lithium Ion battery modules together with a battery management system and light control system.

          The battery modules are based on Leclanché Lithium Titanate cells which provide a lifetime of more than 20 years to the streetlamp with a very high reliability.

          Their large operational temperature range from -20°C to +55°C make them very suitable for operation in remote areas both in cool and in warm climates. Streetlights with Leclanché battery modules are operating in the desert in Abu-Dhabi where the temperature inside the mast easily reached over 50 degrees.

            Leclanché is leading the market with technologies for transportation applications. Our two lithium ion technologies offer very distinct capabilities enabling to design battery systems that are optimally geared for the application of the customer.

            Lithium Titanate Oxide – high power
            In most transportation applications a lot of power is needed for instant, short term traction and torque. To provide this in an electrical vehicle a battery has to be able to rapidly discharge and provide the energy for this torque.
            Leclanché’s Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) batteries are best suited for this.

            Lithium Graphite/NMC – lots of energy
            For longer travel distances a lot of energy is needed. Once the vehicle is in motion, a battery that can gradually and efficiently discharge it’s energy to the drivetrain is the needed solution.
            For this Leclanché provide its Lithium Graphite/NMC (G/NMC) batteries which have a high energy density.

                A key component in the powertrain electrification is on-board electrical energy storage, which is usually a battery. The battery works as an energy buffer in hybrid vehicles, and as a single energy source in full-electric vehicles. The most suitable of the modern battery technologies is lithium-ion that can be optimized for required energy and power. Leclanché can provide a high power option (LTO) and a high energy option (G/NMC) with the same form factor and a revolutionary hybrid battery that combines both of them.

                The most optimal battery cell chemistry is determined by the discharge and charge power requirements (operating strategy) as well as ambient conditions. In a full electric bus driving can usually be done with an energy-type cell, but a power-type cell (LTO) is often more feasible due to the operating strategy. A single bus can operate a full shift with a relatively small battery if the battery is charged at bus stops or at the bus terminal.

                The marine market continues to rely on traditional propulsion power systems, which no longer fulfil the requirements for the clean and efficient use of energy. New emission and noise regulations prohibit the use of conventional solutions in ports, natural reserves, special marinas, and other low-emissions or low-noise areas. Leclanché battery solutions in diesel-electric or full-electric systems offer substantial savings thanks to reduced diesel / oil consumption as well as decreased maintenance and service costs.                   Remote power generation
                  In many areas it is not simply to plug into the wall outlet and have electricity. Very often on islands and in remote villages or industries, connecting to the main grid can be very expensive or even impossible.

                  Electricity often comes from diesel generators. This, however, requires a stable and expensive supply of diesel fuel, and involves high maintenance costs. The result is electricity production that is 4 to 10 times more expensive than in other well-supplied areas – as well as being noisy and polluting.

                  Renewable energy sources
                  In this context, solar and wind energy are rapidly gaining ground in these applications as their costs have declined steeply.

                  These sources of energy are dependent on nature: clouds cause the output of a solar plant to decline rapidly, for example an increase in wind speeds results in a sudden surge in the output of the wind turbine.                   Diesel generators run up to 3 times more efficient when they are running at full capacity yet in many applications they are only used at a fraction of their capacity. Additionally, running at a low load causes damage to the generator. This shortens the maintenance intervals and increases operational expenses.

                  By combining a diesel generator with a storage system, the use of the generator can be optimized and it can even be switched off. This leads to significant savings by:
