Always a step ahead: key technologies for high-performance, efficient and clean engines.
The MWM portfolio is perfectly geared to the challenges of a dynamic market environment. Our gas engines and generator sets with a capacity of 400 to 4,500 KWel (50 Hz) meet the high requirements of a broad range of applications and guarantee efficiency, reliability, flexibility and environmental sustainability, together with low lifecycle costs and high profitability. For distributed power generation, we cover an output range between 300 kWel and 100 MWel with our generator sets.
Public Utilities
-
Flexibly manage base or peak loads with natural gas-fueled cogeneration power plants
Electric utilities can operate gas engine generators continuously to serve base electrical loads. This is particularly advantageous in the absence of a reliable centralized power plant, or where the economics and availability of natural gas fuel are key drivers. Base load is the basic constant demand for electricity required during a typical day. Thus the demand for power is always at least as high as the base load. As a function of the electricity demand, the base load is higher in the winter than in the summer.
Industrial or Commercial Facilities
-
Reduced operating costs due to a highly efficient CHP, distributed generation or emergency standby power
In many industrial installations such as production facilities, refineries and regional district heating plants, the operating costs are reduced by implementing a combined heat and power system (CHP) with clean pipeline natural gas as a fuel. MWM gas powered gensets can simultaneously deliver electrical energy for electrical loads and heat energy for the heating of industrial plants. While the efficiency of separate grid power and natural gas boilers is often less than 50%, our CHP projects offer:
- Energy efficiency of up to 90%
- Lower energy costs than with separate heat and power generation systems
- Lower emissions than with separate heat and power generation systems
If the recovery and use of waste heat is not profitable, many commercial installations can still yield financial benefits by means of distributed electric power, local electric power for captive use or with an emergency standby power plant. This is especially the case if one of the following conditions is true:
- The local electric grid is unreliable.
- Natural gas is an inexpensive alternative to grid electricity.
- Generators can be applied during daily peak load times to avoid high electrical utility demand charges (also know as peak shaving).
Greenhouses
-
Highly-efficient CHP plants: energy efficiency in plant nurseries
The key factor when running greenhouse operations is not only being able to generate off-grid electric power and heat for captive use but also having the option of using the combustion by-products from the natural gas consumed. Thus the exhaust gases are also used to promote plant growth.
Heating the greenhouses requires the largest energy consumption in plant nurseries. Second to this is possible preheating of irrigation water and the heating of retail shop areas. Electrical power is mainly used for lighting and compressed air, along with the operation of boilers, as well as for process control purposes. In the greenhouse facilities, the operating costs can be reduced through implementation of a combined heat and power system (CHP) with clean pipeline natural gas as a fuel.
Our MWM gas engines (gensets) can deliver electrical power for electrical loads, heat energy for the heating of greenhouses, and reusable carbon dioxide from the engine exhaust as organic fertilizer.
Agricultural Biogas
-
Biogas: a highly efficient and profitable alternative for power generation
MWM offers durable and reliable solutions for the use of biogas. This gas, a by-product of many agricultural, food processing and industrial processes, is used today as a fuel for power generators with gas engines (gensets or generators).
Landfills
-
Use of methane for sustainable power production in distributed power plants
With today's focus on renewable energy and carbon emissions reductions, landfill-gas-to-energy projects are gaining momentum. As an important and growing energy production solution within the world's power generation mix, these distributed power plant systems collect, process and treat the available landfill gas to generate electricity. Two common approaches to landfill gas collection include vertical well extraction and horizontal collectors or trenches.
These distributed power plants use our gas engines as generator sets to turn waste into economically viable electricity.
Sewage Plants
-
Utilizing methane from wastewater treatment plants for electrical power production
Many wastewater treatment facilities use waste gas or digester gas from wastewater treatment as a fuel source of generator sets (gas engines). This gas is comprised mostly of methane and carbon dioxide that is generated by wastewater digesters used in the water treatment process. This waste gas is then captured and used by MWM gas engines to provide the plant with electricity and heat for the digester or other thermal loads.
Waste gas has a heating value between 6 and 6.4 kWh/m³ as well as a fluctuating methane content based on its organic raw materials. The heat generated during power production is utilized as process heat in the wastewater treatment plant and thus saves additional energy costs.

MWM competencies
-
MWM competencies in decentralized energy supply
Where Efficiency and Profitability Count
MWM is the market leading brand in the field of decentralized energy supply. With its highly efficient and ecologically progressive energy solutions, MWM guarantees its customers proven, permanent added value.
MWM's portfolio comprises systems and power plants from 400 kWel to 100 MWel and more. It ranges from comprehensive plant engineering to complete project rollout to turnkey plants. The use of cogeneration and trigeneration enables efficiencies of up to 95 percent. Thus, MWM plants make much better use of scarce energy resources than conventional power generation technologies.
Prime Power
-
Prime Power - Decentralized Base Load Power Plants
The base load is the minimum performance of an electricity grid throughout the day. Base load power plants produce exactly this amount of electricity and make it available to the grid. Plants of this type run around the clock in order to ensure constant energy supply. Such MWM cogeneration plants to cover the base load may be small biogas gensets in Germany as well as large power plants in Asia or Africa.
However, gas engines can also compensate the energy feed-in fluctuations of wind and solar power plants and reduce CO2 emissions compared to conventional power plants. The possibility of starting and stopping the plants several times a day within a few minutes makes these plants suitable for covering peak loads. Other advantages of gas gensets include quick availability and operational readiness of the plants thanks to the modular structure. In this way, these plants can be deployed in a more cost-efficient and flexible way than other power plant types.
Cogeneration & Trigeneration
-
Cogeneration - Combined Heat, Power and Cooling (CHP)
Combined energy generation or the use of power and heat or cold enables energy savings of up to 60 percent compared to separate generation in power plants with additional boilers. Power generation is decentralized, i.e. generation takes place where power or heat is needed. In turn, the heat can be fed into a local or district heating network or be used for generating steam.
Cogeneration Plants by MWM
As a holistic partner, MWM not only delivers cogeneration plants and gas engines with an excellent efficiency at attractive prices, but also provides competent advice and service for the development of integrated CHP plants and power plant concepts in order to exploit the entire value chain of decentralized energy generation.
Combined heat and power plants with gas engine gensets can easily and inexpensively be integrated in existing plants.
Gas Solutions
-
Highly efficient gas engines and power generators for various gas types
MWM produces gas engines and power generators (gensets) for various gas types. These gases are used in various applications, such as combined energy generation.
