      • Weighing- and Metering-Technology

      • Taking out a certain quantity of material from a feed bin under control of a weighing unit and the transfer of this quantity to a downstream process is called gravimetric metering of batches. This has to be realized within a preset period of time at a preset velocity.

        This process is oftenly jeopardized by the wide spectrum of bulk material properties and the usually unfavorable ambient conditions for the weighing process, in which the scale has to work properly.

        The equipment necessary for metering is comprising the metering device, the scale and the pertinent control.

        For optimum results these units must be compatible and have to be suitable for the bulk material and also for the ambient conditions. However, the function of this assembly depends also on the proper design of the process interfaces at the intake and the discharge.

        • Storage and discharge - Complete silo installations

        • Bulk solids, produced or handled in a production process, have to be put on stock as a raw product, to be buffered as an intermediate product, or to be stored as a final product. The bulk solid has to be discharged from the storage bin and mostly forwarded to the downstream process by a mechanical conveyor. Special attention has to be paid to a suitable design of storage bin, discharge and conveying system, which have to be adapted to the bulk solid properties and the process requirements. Equally important is that all units fit together regarding the process technology.

              • A safe silo operation is important for a reliable production and preservation of the product quality. The following problems may require a solution:

              • Most bulk solids are supplied by silo truck or railcar and have to be unloaded at the customer’s site into a storage silo. In most cases the conveying into the silo is made pneumatically. The following systems are available:

            • Automation of bulk solids handling systems

              Automation and storage, automation and discharge:
              The storage of large bulk solids quantities is realised in silos, big-bags and containers, equipped with automatic discharge aids for a safe extraction of the required product amount from the container. In case of larger capacities the bags emptying is made automatically; at smaller discharge capacities the manual discharge process is usually supported by mechanical devices (like hoists ....).

              Automation and conveying:
              The application of automation technologies in the field of bulk solids transport - comprising both mechanical systems (screw conveyors, bucket elevators, chain conveyors...) and also pneumatic systems (conveying under overpressure and by vacuum, fluidized bed chutes...) - has a very strong impact on production and productivity. It allows to transport even very large bulk quantities in a reliable and safe manner over great distances without human intervention.
                • Plant control by PLC

                • For the automation of bulk solids systems we apply mainly PLC controls based on SIEMENS S7 or equivalent systems.

                  These control systems supervise the instruments connected to the inputs of the switch cabinet and control – depending on their values and in accordance with the program – the actuators connected to the outputs. The inputs are given by pressure transmitters, temperature detectors, limit switches, rotation detectors etc. The outputs control gear motors and positioning drives.

                  The control disposes about AND/OR functions, counters, markers and timers; which enable it to operate even time–related.

                  The application of PLC controls allows to realise both control purposes and also regulating functions.
                • Process visualisation

                • The visualisation serves to display the actual operating conditions of the plant.

                  The plant is visualised on a PC screen by diagrams for overview and details showing schematically all operation conditions (ON, OFF, MALFUNCTION).

                  Mouse and keyboard allow the access to the visualisation.

                  This allows at any time a detailed overview on the actual operating conditions of the entire plant.

                  Detailed diagrams show in different colours the actual operating conditions of all units (ON, OFF, MALFUNCTION).

                  Several different parameters of the individual units can be displayed and modified if required.

                  Analog and binary signals (process data) can be manually displayed as time diagrams or inserted permanently into the diagrams.

                  In a protected service mode the units can be switched on and off without interlocks even in the automatic mode, but also in the manual mode.
                • Process control system

                • The control room is the heart of every installation, where all signals from production and process are coming in – this is the place where the automation of the plant and the synchronisation of the processes is realized.

                  The field devices (sensors – like e.g. pressure transmitters – and actuators – like regulating valves) realize the control and regulation duties.                 • Basic Engineering / Functional Description

                • For the elaboration of the control sequences a graphic tool is applied, which follows the functional plan (acc. to DIN 40719, part 6) as well as the sequential function charts (acc. to IEC 1131-3). This formal description allows a smooth transition between the development phases analysis, draft and implementation.

                  The process sequence is described verbally characterized by its funtcional groups, single steps, control steps, forward switching conditions, interlockings and start conditions.

                  This form of decription has the particular advantage, that also personnel not being familiar with automation technology is enabled to understand and comprehend without problems the sequences and interdependences of the process technology.

                      • The discharging of bulk solids from silos or containers requires improving the product's flow characteristics.
                        Many bulk solids do not discharge freely through the generally feasible, expedient filling/discharge cross sections.
                        Flow is achieved by the application of force to loosen up settled grains/particles/fibres.
                        Depending on product characteristics, operating conditions and the type of task, vibration, fluidisation / ventilation, or mechanical agitation / mechanical tumbling is selected as a suitable method for discharging.

                          There are two designs of screw conveyors: tubular and trough. The screw's helix can be either full-bladed or shaftless. Screw conveyors are used both in heavy industry and in the fine chemicals industry.                                       How does this technology work?
                                      Take a coin on a paper sheet, and move it with an alternate movement whom return speed is higher than forward way. You can see that the coin is moving to the right side of the sheet…
                                      Movement is given by a mechanical mechanism working in oil bath, designed for long term operation with low maintenance needs.

                                          • Locking valves for bulk solids

                                          • Despite the broad range of available shut-off devices for solids it can be quite a challenge to find a suitable device for a particular set of requirements.

                                            Requirements might be, for instance:

                                            • abrasive or poorly flowing bulk solids
                                            • at temperatures exceeding 200 °C
                                            • with high availability through long seal maintenance intervals and low-maintenance operation

                                            As of May 2002, shut-off devices for bulk solids with operating pressures exceeding 0.5 bars are required to fulfil the new Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC.

                                                • Lump crushers for breaking down lumps or agglomerates are always used if in a process (usually) undesirable, large lumps of material are formed due to storage, sedimentation or pressure.
