                                                                        • Industrial: Length measurement

                                                                        • Industrial optical length measurement delivers swift and reliable measurement results with ultra-high precision over short and long distances. Various measuring principles are available for length measurement using light, such as the triangulation method, the phase measurement process, or the time-of-flight propagation of a pulse. Each measuring principle has advantages and disadvantages and is suitable for specific applications.

Our sensor solutions for length measurement

First Sensor develops and manufactures detector solutions for optical distance measuring devices such as triangulation measurement systems, laser rangefinders, laser scanners, and LIDAR systems. Our one-dimensional, position-sensitive diodes (PSD) are suitable optical detectors for triangulation measurement systems. For laser rangefinders, we offer highly sensitive avalanche photodiodes (APD) for various wavelengths ranging from blue (400 nm) to infrared (1064 nm). Laser scanners and LIDAR systems for distance measurement achieve very high spatial resolutions. For these applications, we supply APD arrays, which are composed of multiple sensor elements with large dynamic ranges as well as wide bandwidths. We also optimize our photodiodes for their special requirements, for example, with reference to sensitivity, amplification, rise time, or capacity.

                                                                        • Industrial: Radiation and security

                                                                        • In security technology, the ability to check items of baggage or to monitor hazard areas is playing an increasingly important role. Sea ports and airports use inspection and security systems such as container scanners, cargo scanners, and baggage scanners to screen and inspect vehicles, freight, and baggage. Accidents in nuclear reactors have led to increased demand for radiation measuring devices to detect radioactive contamination. Other applications for our silicon radiation sensors are X-ray fluorescence spectrometers and equipment for non-destructive material testing.

Our sensor solutions for radiation and security

First Sensor offers a range of photodiodes and sensor systems for measuring ionizing radiation for devices used in inspection and security technology, process monitoring, material analysis and material testing. Alpha, beta, gamma, and X-ray radiation can be detected with silicon PIN photodiodes either directly via the absorption in the crystal lattice or indirectly via the measurement of the luminescence radiation of a scintillation crystal. Scintillators convert the high-energy, ionizing radiation into visible light, which is then measured by highly sensitive photodiodes. First Sensor Series X uses CsI:TI crystals, which achieve a high level of efficiency during the conversion of radiation and emit in the green wavelength range. Silicon absorbs gamma radiation very effectively in the energy range from 1 to 40 keV. With a scintillation crystal, higher radiation energies of up to 1 MeV can also be reliably detected indirectly by silicon photodiodes. In this case, the crystal protects the photodiode from direct high-energy radiation.

First Sensor offers optimized silicon PIN photodiodes, which form wide, fully depleted space-charge regions even at low reverse voltages in order to guarantee the maximum absorption of radiation. The fully depleted PIN photodiodes from Series X enable very large absorptions volumes and extremely low dark currents.

                                                                        • Industrial: Smart Building Solutions

                                                                        • Today, modern building automation and HVAC technology intelligently match energy generation, energy distribution, air conditioning, and heat recovery to ensure that energy is used in a manner that saves resources and costs. The measurements are supplied by a large number of sensors for temperature, air humidity, pressure, and air flow in decentralized systems, machines, and rooms. With the help of this data, the automation system monitors, controls and regulates the technical systems. At a higher management level of building automation, all information is compiled and evaluated and the economical operation of the entire building is optimized.

Our sensor solutions for Smart Building

First Sensor offers high-quality sensor solutions for building automation and HVAC systems that range from individual sensors to complex customer-specific sensor systems that help to boost the energy efficiency of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems. We offer a range of sensor technologies for measuring minute differential pressures in air-conditioning technology and building automation. Our flow-based LME and LDE differential pressure sensors measure ultra-low pressures from 25 Pa (0.25 mbar) with ultra-high resolution and offset stability. Due to the minimal air flow through the flow channel integrated in the sensor chip, the sensors are highly resistant to dust. The membrane-based piezoresistive HCL and HCLA pressure sensors achieve exceptionally linear signal/pressure characteristic curves for measurement ranges from 2.5 mbar.

Comprehensive monitoring of a building also includes monitoring the building structure. Our precision MEMS inertial sensors detect the smallest changes in position or acceleration and thus help to detect and monitor structural changes, damage, and critical stress conditions on buildings.

                                                                        • Industrial: Industrial process control

                                                                        • Industrial process control involves monitoring and controlling machinery, systems, and processes across a large number of industries: chemicals, pharmaceutics, biotechnology, energy, water/wastewater, oil, gas, plastic, paper, food, and beverages. Nowadays, industrial preparation, processing, and manufacturing systems are highly automated in order to ensure that raw materials and energy are consumed in a conservative and efficient manner. In this context, the ability to measure pressures, levels, and flow rates reliably and precisely in harsh, humid, and dusty environments and to measure aggressive, corrosive, explosive, and other liquids and gases is essential.

Our sensor solutions for industrial process control

Level sensing is one of the most common applications in industrial process control. Key factors influencing the choice of a suitable level sensor include the size, geometry, and material of the vessel, the presence of equipment in the tank such as agitators, and the type of process medium. First Sensor's range of level sensors for industrial process control includes hydrostatic level sensing as well as optoelectronic level switches and ranges from simple limit value detection to precision continuous level sensing. For hydrostatic level sensing, First Sensor offers rugged pressure transmitters in two different installation variants: as a submersible sensor for positioning in the fluid or with a screw thread for attachment to the exterior tank wall.

                                                                        • Industrial: Aerospace

                                                                        • Sensors, electronic circuits, modules, and customized systems have a decisive influence on the quality, economic efficiency and safety of aerospace applications. Extreme environmental conditions such as temperature changes, acceleration, and vibrations place very high demands on the reliability and resilience of the products. At the same time, the systems need to be small, light, and sophisticated. In addition, the long development, approval, and operation times in the aerospace field call for reliable cooperation partners for development and production activities as well as to ensure particularly long-term availability of the products.

First Sensor Lewicki GmbH, which is owned by First Sensor AG, has over 50 years of application expertise and experience in aerospace technology and operates development, production, and service activities according to processes and procedures certified to EN 9100. To check the reliability of our products, we conduct stress tests (design margin tests) as well as screening and qualification, for example, according to ESA standards. The use of the latest thick-film hybrid technology enables the construction of very small, robust, and ultra-reliable electronic modules and circuits, e.g. for power electronics applications. These custom systems from First Sensor provide you with cost savings in the development of OEM devices as well as competitive advantages due to the resulting short development cycles and innovative solutions.

                                                                        • Medical: Breathing and respiration

                                                                        • Air and gas flows as well as line and therapy pressures have to be monitored and controlled in numerous medical instruments such as respiratory devices, anesthetic devices, sleep diagnosis devices, sleep apnea therapy devices (CPAP), spirometers and oxygen concentrators. High-quality sensors in respiratory devices measure minute flow rates around the zero point of the respiratory flow and also detect flow rates of several hundred l/min. Applications in anesthetic devices call for sensors with high resistance to anesthetics. In controlled CPAP devices, pressure sensors continuously monitor the therapy pressure, thereby improving the comfort and quality of the treatment. Spirometers utilize special pneumotachographs that measure the respiratory flow using efficient differential pressure sensors.

First Sensor develops and manufactures highly reliable sensors and customized sensor systems as a strategic partner to medical product manufacturers in the area of breathing and respiration. Our complete advisory, development, production and service processes comply with the high requirements for medical products according to EN ISO 13485.

                                                                        • Medical: Dialysis

                                                                        • Dialysis or renal replacement therapy is a blood purification process that removes toxic or waste substances from the blood of patients with chronic renal failure or chronic renal insufficiency. The exchange of substances here occurs by means of diffusion via a semipermeable dialysis membrane. Different dialysis methods are hemodialysis, hemofiltration and hemodiafiltration.

Modern dialysis devices use a variety of sensors for safety-critical monitoring of pressure, flow and liquid level in the dialysate and blood circulation as well as for detecting leaks and air in the hose system. In particular, the patient's blood pressure must be monitored continuously during dialysis.

                                                                        • Medical: Endoscopy

                                                                        • In medical endoscopy, rigid or flexible endoscopes are used for diagnosis and for minimally invasive operations inside the body. Rigid endoscopes transmit the light and image information via mirrors into the body and back out. Flexible endoscopes transmit the light for illumination and the image via optical waveguides. Special versions of flexible endoscopes are video-endoscopes or videoscopes. These devices use a CCD chip at the tip of the endoscope for imaging. The digital image information is then communicated electrically via a video cable and displayed on a monitor.

Endoscopy systems are mostly combined with an insufflator, which guides CO2 gas into the patient's body, thereby creating cavities and hence space for the endoscopic examination or operation, e.g. during procedures in the abdominal cavity (laparoscopy). Modern insufflators have a highly accurate pressure and flow control so as to be able to set and maintain even the smallest body cavities precisely.

                                                                        • Medical: Diagnostics

                                                                        • Medical diagnostics serves to investigate the causes of diseases or functional disorders and diagnose these. Imaging methods such as endoscopy, computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) play an important role here. A further field involves laboratory diagnostics, which utilizes photometric processes for examining blood, for example. Blood sugar measuring devices determine the glucose concentration in the blood of diabetes patients. A generation of devices measures in a non-invasive manner using optical methods and thus enables continuous monitoring, thereby sparing the patient uncomfortable finger pricks. In a similar way, pulse oximeters measure the oxygen concentration in the blood via the different light absorption of the hemoglobin saturated with oxygen. Spirometry examines the function of the lungs in order to diagnose respiratory tract and lung diseases such as asthma or chronic-obstructive bronchitis.

In the above and many other methods of medical diagnostics, new technologies and technical improvements enable ever faster and more accurate results and consequently result in better treatment success. Sensors and sensor systems are an essential component of the applications here. With its long-standing international experience in the area of development and production services for medical technology, First Sensor offers you extensive options to stand apart from the competition through innovative products – thanks to even more accurate, rapid or reliable individual solutions.

                                                                        • Mobility: Advanced driver assistance systems – ADAS

                                                                        • Driver assistance systems both increase the safety and effeciency of motor vehicles, commercial vehicles and special vehicles and shape the mobility of tomorrow. Thereby highly resilient and reliable cameras, optical sensors and LIDAR systems are essential for applications such as reversing aid, adaptive cruise control (ACC), traffic sign recognition, blind spot detection, blind spot assist, lane departure or warning 360° all-round view. First Sensor supplies OEMs, integrators and retrofitters at various levels of the value chain from components to modules and complete systems.
                                                                        • Mobility: OEM pressure sensors

                                                                        • The number of sensors in modern vehicles and mobile machines is continually increasing. Sensors supply the measuring values for the electronic control units and are therefore an essential component for the safe, comfortable and economic operation of cars, trucks, commercial and special vehicles. The extreme conditions in automobile applications such as heat, cold or continuous vibrations place high demands on the reliability and resilience of sensors. At the same time, the sensors need to be small, energy saving and cost effective.
