      What is a Robotic Tool Changer (QC)?
      An end-effector with two mating parts, a Master-side and a Tool-side that have been designed to lock or couple together automatically, carry a payload, and have the ability to pass utilities such as electrical signals, pneumatic, water, etc. Most robot couplers use pneumatics to lock the Master- and Tool-sides together. The Robot Tool Changer provides the flexibility for any automated process to change tools and pass various utilities. The Master-side of the Tool Changer mounts to a robot, CNC machine, or other structure. The Tool-side of the Tool Changer mounts to tooling, such as grippers, welders, or deburring tools. A Robot Tool Changer is also known as a Quick-Change device (QC), an automatic tool changer (ATC), robot tool changer, robot coupler, robotic coupler, or robotic connector.

      Standard Quick Change Tool Changers - This series of Tool Changers is built around a 'round' body with integrated pneumatic ports and our patented high-strength locking mechanism. A variety of electrical modules are available for use with the Standard Series.

      Heavy Automation Quick Change Tool Changers - The Heavy Automation Series of Tool Changers is built around a 'square' body and uses our patented high-strength locking mechanism. This series of Tool Changers is more modular in design, with a wide variety of electrical, pneumatic, fluid, and high-power modules available. Heavy Automation Tool Changers are commonly used in heavy material handling and primary and secondary welding applications.

        The piston acts as a large dowel pin, aligning the Master plate and Tool plate with unmatched repeatability. Million-cycle testing, at rated load, shows that the typical repeatability is much better than the guaranteed values.

        The Quick-Change Tool Changer has a large moment capacity due to the locking piston's high coupling strength and large diameter. The coupled Tool Changer remains rigid during high-inertia moves preventing locking failure or repeatability problems

                  Historically, deburring and material removal has largely been a manual operation due to the limitations of previously available automated deburring tools. Conventional automated deburring tools can perform adequately along a straight edge or surface, with little or no compliance for cavities or protrusions, but these tools ultimately fail when part tolerances or paths are not exact. The Engineers at ATI have developed three types of compliant deburring tools that make automated deburring cells a safe, consistent, and economical process.

                  What is a Robotic Deburring Tool?


                  Deburring tool, air- or electrically-driven, with compliance and a method to mount to a robot wrist. Deburring tools can also be mounted to a bench or fixture, with parts brought to the unit to be deburred.
                    • Radially-Compliant Deburring Tools

                    • ATI’s line of Radially-Compliant (RC) Deburring Tools, also known as Flexdeburr TM, are robust, high-speed and lightweight air turbine-driven deburring units for deburring aluminum, plastic, steel, etc. with a robot or CNC machine. The RC Deburring Tool is especially suited for removal of parting lines and flash from parts. However, its flexible design allows it to be used in a wide variety of applications.

                      The RC Deburring Tool’s pneumatically controlled, articulated design allows the cutting bit to follow the part profile and compensate for surface irregularities while maintaining a constant, settable force. This allows high feed rates with uniform quality in any orientation. The tool also requires no oil, allowing clean exhaust air to be vented directly into the work environment.

                      Compliance is supported by air pressure applied to the shaft of the unit and is used to perform consistent deburring on irregular part patterns. The motor’s internal governor maintains high spindle speeds for optimum surface finish. The tools offer up to ± 9mm of compliance. The RC Deburring Tool also utilizes standard industrial tungsten-carbide bits which allows for adaptation to changing assembly lines and part requirements.

                      • ATI’s line of Axially-Compliant (AC) Deburring Tools, also known as Speedeburr TM, are a patented family of robust, high-speed, low-weight air tools with a floating rotary cutting burr for edge-deburring and chamfering of aluminum, plastic, steel, etc. with a robot.

                        While spinning at high speeds, a rotary cutting burr or file (tungsten carbide, PCD, or CBN coated cutting burr) rides on a cushion of air that provides compliance while maintaining a constant force. Because the rotary burr has a 45° cutting angle, the compliance is both lateral and axial. This patented force control system provides a very high stiffness in the path direction and a low stiffness in the contact force direction that prevents chattering (a common problem with robotic deburring). Due to the extremely low inertia of the cutting burr, Axially-Compliant Deburring Tools can quickly deburr parts, greatly reducing cycle time.

                        AC Deburring Tools maintain a consistent deburring result from part-to-part. The floating head design reacts quickly to any variances in part position or robot path. As a result, robot programming time can be reduced by up to 75%.

                        • ATI's Axially Compliant Finishing Tool, also known as VersaFinish, is a robust, low-speed, high-torque air tool with an axially floating spindle, suitable for a multitude of robotic and non-robotic material finishing operations on aluminum, plastic, steel, etc.

                          The rotating spindle is equipped with a 3/8” chuck for holding customer-supplied tools. These may include, but are not limited to, abrasive brushes, wire brushes, sanding disks, polishing points, and chamfering tools. While spinning at low speeds the customer's tool is pushed against the workpiece using an adjustable air supply to control the contact force. This constant pneumatic force allows the spindle to respond axially to changes in part profile. The force control system provides very high stiffness in the path direction and a low stiffness in the contact force direction.

                          Optional sensing devices are available to detect the position of the spindle and monitor its speed for process development.
